April 16^th, 2012, SNERDI President Zheng Mingguang met with Ms. Amy Lientz, the Director of Communications of Idaho National Laboratory.

After hearing President Zheng’s presentation about SNERDI’s history, engineering and design capabilities and research orientation, the two had discussion about SNERDI’s newly designed CAP1400 and SMR (Small Modular Reactor). Ms. Lientz consulted about SNERDI’s safety-related design modification after Fukushima Accident, safety features of CAP1400 as well as the deployment issue about SNERDI’s SMR.

President Zheng said, after Fukushima Accident, SNERDI and Westinghouse had respectively made independent safety analysis about AP1000 design. Results showed that AP1000 is fully capable of surviving combined events beyond DBA (Design Basis Accident). SNERDI’s self-developed CAP1400 adopts complete new design to meet safety target, which results in enhanced safety. However, the deployment of SMR depends upon the requirements of utilities. Mostly, it is fit for small countries, even for vessels.

Both of them expressed willingness of technical exchange in the fields of advanced nuclear technology, small modular reactor, materials, safety analysis and life extension of operating NPPs.
